Raiders Draft Capsules
A quick look at Oakland's 2007 NFL draft picks:
JaMarcus Russell
QB, Louisiana State6-5½, 258
1st round, 1st overall
Key stat:
Completed 61.86 percent of his passes (second best in school history) in three seasons at LSU.
Did you know?:
Russell is the first quarterback taken by the Raiders in the first round since 1991 when Todd Marinovich was selected with the 24th overall choice.
NFL potential:
Russell compares physically to former Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper. Russell has outstanding arm strength and size for his position. He can throw the ball 80 yards on the fly, which fits the Raiders' deep passing philosophy. He's poised under pressure, but will force the ball into coverage.
Zach Miller
TE, Arizona State6-4½, 255
2nd round, 38th overall
Key stat:
Contributed 50 catches for 484 yards and four TDs during the 2006 season despite missing two games because of an ankle injury.
Did you know?:
Miller set a Sun Devils record as a freshman with 56 catches for 552 yards and six touchdowns and was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. He finished his ASU career with 144 catches and 14 TDs.
NFL potential:
Miller is a possession-type receiver with superb hands and is a decent blocker. With a knack for getting open, the former Sun Devil is expected to contend for a starting role as a rookie.
Quentin Moses
DE, Georgia6-5, 260
3rd round, 65th overall
Key stat:
Recorded 4½ sacks as a senior in 2006 after having 11½ sacks during his junior season.
Did you know?:
Moses made the SEC Academic Honor Roll each of his final three seasons at Georgia.
NFL potential:
Moses must eliminate the inconsistency he exhibited during his final season with the Bulldogs. Still, you can't ignore his 24½ sacks in four seasons. At the very least, Moses will get an opportunity to be a pass-rush specialist at right defensive end, opposite two-time Pro Bowler Derrick Burgess.
Mario Henderson
OT, Florida State6-6½, 307
3rd round, 91st overall
Key stat:
Started every game as a senior after being a backup the previous two seasons.
Did you know?:
As a true freshman, Henderson played on special teams and started at left tackle in the Orange Bowl against Miami.
NFL potential:
Henderson is athletic and exhibits quick feet, but needs to improve his blocking technique and strength to develop into an NFL-caliber offensive tackle.
Johnnie Lee Higgins
WR, Texas-El Paso5-11½, 185
3rd round, 99th overall
Key stat:
Finished his college career as UTEP's all-time leader in receiving yards (3,218) and TD receptions (32) and ranks second in receptions (190).
Did you know?:
Higgins, nicknamed "The Real Deal" at UTEP, is the cousin of Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer.
NFL potential:
Higgins could earn a roster spot as a rookie as a kick returner and a special teams gunner because of his speed and elusiveness.
Michael Bush
RB, Louisville6-1, 243
4th round, 100th overall
Key stat:
Scored 23 TDs as a junior in 2005, his lone 1,000-yard season (1,143) with the Cardinals.
Did you know?:
Bush entered the 2006 season as a Hesiman Trophy candidate before sustaining a season-ending leg injury in Louisville’s opener. He underwent two surgeries to repair two broken bones in his right leg.
NFL potential:
Bush wasn't chosen in the first three rounds because of his injury history. If he returns to full health and controls his weight, he could be a productive player as a ballcarrier and receiver. Raiders coach Lane Kiffin compares Bush to current Tennessee Titan and former USC Trojan Lendell White.
John Bowie
CB, Cincinnati5-11, 190
4th round, 110th overall
Key stat:
Started 12 of 13 games as a senior after seeing limited action the previous three seasons because of injury.
Did you know?:
Bowie won the Big East Conference 100 meters in 10.52 seconds.
NFL potential:
Bowie's speed (4.24 seconds over 40 yards) gives him a chance to contribute on special teams as a rookie. Given the Raiders' depth at cornerback, he's a long shot to earn a roster spot.
Jay Richardson
DE, Ohio State6-5½, 276
5th round, 138th overall
Key stat:
Starting all 13 games as a senior, he contributed 8.5 tackles for loss and four sacks.
Did you know?:
Richardson batted down seven passes in his final season with the Buckeyes.
NFL potential:
Richardson could develop into a situational pass rusher because of his athleticism and long arms.
Eric Frampton
SS, Washington State5-11, 206
5th round, 165th overall
Key stat:
Contributed a combined 187 tackles as a junior and senior.
Did you know?:
Frampton returned two of six interceptions for touchdowns during his final two seasons with WSU.
NFL potential:
Frampton developed a reputation as a playmaker and hard-hitter after being switched from cornerback to safety following his redshirt freshman season. With high energy and toughness, he has a chance to contribute on special teams and eventually as an in-the-box run defender.
Oren O'Neal
FB, Arkansas State5-11½, 245
6th round, 175th overall
Key stat:
His best season of 146 rushing yards on 25 carries came as a sophomore in 2004.
Did you know?:
O'Neal started three seasons at Division I-AA Arkansas State after recovering from chylothorax surgery.
NFL potential:
O'Neal will have to excel on special teams to win a roster spot as a rookie. Because of his blocking and receiving ability, he compares to former Raiders fullback Jon Ritchie.
Jonathan Holland
WR, Louisiana Tech State6-foot, 190
7th round, 254th overall
Key stat:
Averaged 22.2 yards per catch on 19 receptions during his sophomore season in 2004. He finished his senior season with 33 catches for 503 yards and three TDs.
Did you know?:
Holland returned nine kicks for touchdowns (5 punts & 4 kickoffs) during his prep career at (Mangham (La.) High School.
NFL potential:
Holland has a chance to win a roster spot as a special teams gunner because of his speed. Competing on Louisiana Tech's track team in 2004, he won Western Athletic Conference sprint titles in the 60 meters (6.82 seconds) and 100 meters (10.26).
