2008 Schedule Announced

The 2008 Raiders schedule is highlighted by high-profile home games against the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots.

The Raiders open against the visiting Broncos on Sept. 8 at 7:15 p.m., the second game of a Monday night ESPN doubleheader. It’s the first prime-time game for Oakland since its 2006 season opener against San Diego.

Oakland hosts American Conference champion New England on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 1:15 p.m. Wide receiver Randy Moss returns to McAfee Coliseum for the first time since being traded by the Raiders to the Patriots in April 2007.

Oakland also plays a Thursday night game at San Diego on Dec. 4 that is scheduled to be televised on NFL Network.

The NFL announced its 2008 regular-season schedule April 15.

Since playing in Super Bowl XXXVII in January 2003, the Raiders have gone 19-61, the worst record in the NFL over that period. In 2008, Oakland tries to end a franchise-worst five straight losing seasons.

The Raiders' 2008 opponents had a 90-118 combined regular-season record in 2007. Oakland plays three 2007 playoff teams — Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Patriots and San Diego Chargers.

Only three of Oakland's opponents had winning records in 2007. The Raiders’ opponents had a .438 winning percentage last season. Only San Diego (.422) and New England (.387) have a more favorable schedule in the AFC.

The Raiders play three home-and-home games with division opponents Denver, Kansas City and San Diego.

The Raiders play the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens based on a predetermined league formula that pits teams that finished at the same position in their division the previous season. The eight other non-division games are the result of a rotational system, where teams play every team from one AFC division and every team from one NFC division — two at home, two on the road — each year.

2008 schedule notes:
Of the Raiders' first 12 opponents, only the Chargers (at Oakland on Sept. 28), had a winning record in 2007.

Oakland opens the season with back-to-back division games (Denver at Oakland on Sept. 8 and Oakland at Kansas City on Sept. 14) for the first time since 1990. The Raiders are 2-18 in their past 20 games against AFC West opposition.

The Patriots play the Raiders in Oakland for the first time since the 2002 season.

The Jets play the Raiders in Oakland for the first time since 2003. The teams played in Oakland seven times (5 regular season, 2 playoffs) from 1999 to 2003.

Oakland ends its regular season against the host Buccaneers on Dec. 28, the Raiders' second-ever road game in Tampa, Fla. The host Bucs beat the Raiders 20-17 in overtime in 1996.

The Raiders host the Texans for the third straight season.

The Raiders have only one potential cold weather game — at Denver on Nov. 23.

For the second straight season, Oakland draws a bye in Week 5.
