Raiders 17, 49ers 10

FLASH RECAP:
Madre Hill and Reggie Barlow score touchdowns to help the Raiders defeat the 49ers before an announced crowd of 40,120 at Network Associates Coliseum on Aug. 24, 2002. Hill, an undrafted free agent from Arkansas, breaks a 10-10 tie with a 15-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter. Barlow scores on a 57-yard punt return and Sebastian Janikowski kicks a 43-yard field goal for Oakland (1-2), which snaps a five-game exhibition losing streak to San Francisco. Tim Rattay throws a 15-yard touchdown pass to Cedrick Wilson and Jeff Chandler kicks a 24-yard field goal for the 49ers (1-3). The Raiders first-team defense, unveiling a 3-4 alignment (three defensive linemen, four linebackers), holds the 49ers to 80 total yards (6 rushing) in the first half. The 49ers finish with 246 total yards and allow three sacks.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Oakland
QB Rick Mirer - Completes all five of his passes for 70 yards. The former 49ers backup is 3-for-3 passing for 34 yards on Oakland's winning drive.
WR Reggie Barlow - Gives the Raiders their first lead in the 2002 exhibition season with a 57-yard punt return for a touchdown 4:55 into the first quarter.
DT John Parrella - Slams 49ers QB Jeff Garcia to the turf for one of Oakland's three sacks.
LB Eric Barton - Has a team-high five tackles (four unassisted). On San Francisco's first offensive play from its 1-yard line, Barton almost gets a safety when he stuffs fullback Fred Beasley at the line of scrimmage.
P Kevin Stemke - Three of his five punts pin the 49ers inside their 8-yard line.

San Francisco
QB Tim Rattay - Completes 12 of 19 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown. What would have been his second TD pass of the game is negated by a holding penalty in the fourth quarter.
WR Cedric Wilson - Makes a 15-yard touchdown catch late in the first half. Despite decent coverage by Oakland cornerback Phillip Buchanon, Wilson hauls in Tim Rattay's pass right inside the sideline chalk in the corner of the end zone.
LB Jeff Ulbrich - Contributes a game-high six solo tackles.
CB Jason Webster -- Sets up the 49ers' only touchdown when he recovers a Rich Gannon fumble at the Oakland 35.

KEY STAT:
Oakland and San Francisco combine for 20 penalties. The Raiders have 10 infractions for 86 yards and the 49ers have 10 for 70 yards. Each team has a touchdown nullified by penalty.

TURNING POINT:
Rick Mirer drives Oakland 61 yards in eight plays for the winning touchdown. After Mirer throws an 8-yard pass to Elijah Thurmon on third-and-seven from the San Francisco 23, Madre Hill runs the final 15 yards for a touchdown with 7:25 remaining.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 2: Missed field goal attempts of 36 and 33 yards by Sebastian Janikowski. The Polish Cannon has made only 3 of 8 kicks in Oakland's first three 2002 exhibition games. The struggling Janikowski hears boos from the Coliseum crowd during the first half.
  • 7: First-half plays by the 49ers that gain zero or lose yards.
  • 65: Yards rushing by the 49ers on 19 attempts (a 3.4 average). Take away Jamal Roberston's 29-yard run, and the 49ers average 2 yards per carry (18 attempts, 36 yards).

THEY SAID IT:
"Our guys played extremely aggressive and physical. They were fresh and looked energized and did a great job of keeping one of the best rushing offenses in the league to minimal yardage."

Raiders coach Bill Callahan

"We've got to play better than that to beat a good team like the Raiders. We can't have all those penalties."

49ers coach Steve Mariucci

DID YOU KNOW?:
The Raiders beat the 49ers in an exhibition game for the first time since a 23-13 triumph at San Francisco on Aug. 11, 1990. The 49ers, who had won the previous five meetings between the teams, are 11-2 in their past 13 exhibition games against the Raiders.
