Panthers 17, Raiders 6

FLASH RECAP:
Quarterback Cam Newton accounts for 230 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns to lead host Carolina to a victory over Oakland before an announced crowd of 73,026 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Dec. 23, 2012.

Newton throws a 23-yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith in the first quarter and runs 3 yards for another score with 17 seconds left in the second quarter as the Panthers (6-9) build a 14-3 halftime advantage.

Sebastian Janikowski kicks field goals of 21 and 31 yards for the Raiders (4-11).

Oakland quarterback Carson Palmer is sidelined late in the first quarter for the rest of the game following a hard hit by Carolina linebacker Greg Hardy, who is penalized for unnecessary roughness. Palmer is 3 for 3 passing for 31 yards before being injured.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen tells reporters that Palmer is taken to a hospital following the game, but X-rays on his ribs are negative.

Matt Leinart, Palmer's backup, is 16 of 32 passing for 115 yards and an interception in three-plus quarters of play.

Oakland's longest play from scrimmage is a 22-yard reception on a trick play by No. 3 quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

With the loss to the Panthers, the Raiders lose 11 or more games in a season for the eighth time the past 10 seasons.

Carolina
QB Cam Newton — Has 170 passing yards and 60 rushing yards and accounts for two touchdowns.

Panthers defense — The unit holds the Raiders to 189 total yards and 12 first downs.

WR Steve Smith — His 23-yard TD catch gives the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 3:12 left in the first quarter. Smith finishes with 4 catches for 45 yards.

Oakland
LB Miles Burris — Has an interception, one-half sack and 7 total tackles

K Sebastian Janikowski — Is 2 for 2 on field-goal attempts, giving him seven field goals the past two games.

QB Terrelle Pryor — Is 1 for 1 passing for 5 yards and has a 22-yard reception, the longest play from scrimmage for the Raiders.

KEY STATS:
The Raiders do not score a touchdown for the second straight game and third time in 15 games this season.


Oakland has only 47 rushing yards on 22 carries (2.1 yards per rush). In a 15-0 win over Kansas City in Week 15, the Raiders have 203 rushing yards.
The Panthers and Raiders combine for 16 penalties for 167 yards. Carolina has 10 infractions for 97 yards while Oakland has 7 for 70 yards. The teams combine for 6 unnecessary roughness penalties.

"That's his first extended action in a regular-season game in a long time, so I'm sure there was a little bit of rust there. But, at the end of the day, when you lose your starting quarterback, there are a lot of other guys who have got to step up, and we didn't have enough guys that make enough plays for us offensively."
