Former Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha formally announced his retirement as an NFL player after signing a one-day contract with the team on Dec. 27, 2013 at the Raiders' headquarters in Alameda, Calif.

Asomugha, right, made three Pro Bowls and was a two-time first-team All-Pro during his eight seasons with the Raiders. The former University of California defensive back developed into one of the NFL's top cover cornerbacks as a Raider.

His NFL playing career quickly went bad after he signed a $60 million, five-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles before the 2011 season. He was cut after two seasons with the Eagles and played only three games this season for the San Francisco 49ers before being released in November.

"I’m just grateful to be back, grateful for everything to go full circle,” Asomugha told Bay Area reporters Dec. 27. “For all of the achievements and awards, to be able to retire as a Raider ranks highest among all of those.”

Asomugha, 32, established himself as an elite NFL cornerback with eight interceptions during the 2006 season when the Raiders went 2-14. In the next four seasons, he reportedly had only 136 passes thrown at him in 60 games, allowing 66 completions and two touchdowns.

He reportedly earned $9.5 million in 2008 and then siggned a $45.3 million, three-year deal the following season. That contract avoided after two seasons and Asomugha became a high-profile free agent after the 2010 season.

Asomugha was selected by the Raiders with the 31st overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft. He 15 career interceptions and 355 solo tackles in 143 career games.

“When I first came into the league not too many people really knew who I was,” Asomugha told reporters Dec. 27. “When I first got here I was definitely called a reach. In great Al Davis fashion, he took a reach that he believed in and instilled confidence in me like nobody else could and I was able to become all that he expected of me.”
