49ers 23, Raiders 20

FLASH RECAP:
Jose Cortez kicks a 23-yard field goal with six minutes, 19 seconds left in overtime to give the 49ers (6-2) a victory over the Raiders before an announced crowd of 62,660 at Network Associates Coliseum on Nov. 3, 2002. Jeff Garcia (above) throws for 282 yards and two touchdowns and Terrell Owens has 12 catches for 191 yards to lead San Francisco.

After the Raiders' Charlie Garner deadlocks the score 20-20 on a 10-yard touchdown run with 6:33 left in the fourth quarter, the 49ers run 30 consecutive plays on their final two drives. Cortez is wide left on a 27-yard field goal attempt as time expires in regulation on the 13th play of a 45-yard drive. After San Francisco wins the coin toss before overtime, Garcia leads a 17-play, 73-yard drive culminated by Cortez's second field goal. On the winning drive, the 49ers are successful on two third-down plays and one fourth-down play.

"I was mad I had an opportunity to win the game and didn't do it," a relieved Cortez tells reporters after Oakland (4-4) suffers its fourth straight loss. "Everybody was telling me to shake it off, and I was going to get another chance. I was glad I had another chance."

Despite the game extending into overtime, the 49ers dominate the Raiders statistically. San Francisco outgains Oakland 434 yards to 239 and controls the football for a whopping 44:38 compared to Oakland's 24:08.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

San Francisco
QB Jeff Garcia - Throws for 282 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-36 passing. He also rushes for 46 yards on 10 carries. Garcia has two drive-saving third-down runs on San Francisco's winning drive. On third-and-seven, he scrambles for 10 yards. On third-and-11, he breaks a tackle and officially gains 10 yards (the 49ers are originally given a first down, but after officials review the play Garcia is ruled down inches short.) Fred Beasley then picks up the first down on a fourth-and-one run.
WR Terrell Owens - T.0. torches the Oakland seccondary in general and Charles Woodson in particular for 191 receiving yards on 12 catches. Owens has six grabs for 133 yards in one-on-one confrontations with Woodson, who returns to the lineup after missing the previous five games because of a fractured right shoulder.
K Jose Cortez - The former XFLer is wide left on 39- and 27-yard field goal attempts during regulation, but he drills the game-winner from 23 yards with 6:23 left in overtime. His 22-yarder deadlocks the score at 13-13 early in the third period.
WR Tai Streets - Contributes eight catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.
C Jeremy Newberry - His call of "tails never fails" in the coin flip before overtime sets the stage for arguably the 49ers' biggest victory in the Steve Mariucci era.

Oakland
WR Jerry Porter - Has six catches of 53 yards and a tochodwon. He makes a leaping catch on a first-quarter touchdown reception and keeps Oakland's game-tying drive alive in the fourth quarter with a 16-yard grab on fourth-and-three.
QB Rich Gannon - Throws for a season-low 164 yards on 18-of-28 passing, but he engineers a game-tying touchdown drive midway through the fourth quarter.
WR Jerry Rice - Contributes six catches for 74 yards.
DE Tony Bryant - Fumble recovery sets up a Raiders touchdown.

KEY STAT:
Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon throws for a season-low 164 yards after equaling a league record of 300 or more yards passing in six straight games.

GOAT:

Raiders S Rod Woodson

"This has to be one of my most satisfying wins. For us as a team to deal with the abuse we get on the sidelines, it was so exhilarating ... so emotional. It was an in-your-face kind of thing, it was getting the last word."
