OAKLAND RAIDERS RAP

Broncos 33, Raiders 24

FLASH RECAP:
Joe Nedney kicks four field goals and Mike Anderson rushes for 187 yards to lead Denver past Oakland before an announced crowd of 62,078 at Network Associates Coliseum on Sept. 17, 2000. The Raiders, who suffer their sixth straight loss to the hated Broncos, commit four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumbles) and control the ball for only 22:54.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Denver
PK Joe Nedney -- Former Raider kicks field goals of 24, 32, 22 and 21 yards. He also sends two kickoffs into the end zone.
RB Mike Anderson -- Rushes for 187 yards on 32 carries. The ex-Marine becomes one of nine players in NFL history to rush for 100 or more yards in his first two starts. He had 131 yards rushing in Denver's 42-14 win over Atlanta on Sept. 10.
QB Brian Griese -- Completes 21 of 31 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns, despite suffering a cut near his chin when he's hit by a helmet during the second quarter. He's 3-0 against Oakland in his two-year NFL career.
MLB Al Wilson -- Makes 1 1/2 sacks and six tackles. His fierce play helps Denver shut out Oakland in the second half and allow only 263 total yards overall.
Denver offensive line -- Broncos have the ball for a whopping 37:01 and run 27 more plays than the Raiders. Mike Anderson repeatedly has the luxury of running through huge holes in Oakland's defensive line.
Oakland
WR Tim Brown -- Passes Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff as the Raiders' career touchdown pass catcher with scores of 9 and 11 yards. Brown has seven receptions for 92 yards; all other Raiders combine for six catches for 67 yards.
RB Randy Jordan -- Blocks a Denver punt and then returns it three yards for a touchdown midway through the second quarter.
DT Grady Jackson -- Contributes Oakland's only two sacks on Denver QB Brian Griese.

GOAT OF THE GAME:
Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon suffers two interceptions and losses a fumble (which is returned 28 yards for a touchdown by Denver's Trevor Pryce). Gannon completes 13 of 21 passes for a season-low 159 yards.

TURNING POINT:
With the score tied at 24-24, Oakland opens the second half by driving to the Denver 6. On second-and-goal, linebacker John Mobley intercepts a Rich Gannon pass intended for Andre Rison in the end zone. The Broncos then build an insurmountable 33-24 advantage by kicking a field goal on each of their next three possessions.

KEY DRIVE:
Denver moves 58 yards in eight plays to take a 33-24 lead on Joe Nedney's 21-yard field goal with 4:39 remaining. The Broncos start the drive at their 39 after Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski is wide left on a 49-yard field goal attempt.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 0: Receptions by Oakland wide receivers other than Tim Brown.
  • 4: Turnovers by Oakland.
  • 6: Consecutive victories by the Broncos over the Raiders.
  • 187: Rushing yards by Denver RB Mike Andreson.

THEY SAID IT:
"I'm pretty disappointed at myself and the rest of us. We did not do a good job today. ... God awful. I don't know what else to say. It was pathetic."
