Broncos 13, Raiders 3

FLASH RECAP:
An offense that can’t find the end zone, a late-game fumble and four sacks allowed are key factors in Oakland’s loss to Denver before an announced crowd of 76,691 at Invesco Field at Mile High on Oct. 15, 2006.

The Raiders (0-5) open a season with five losses for the first time since 1964. Their losing streak reaches 11 games and they suffer their 18th loss in the past 20 games against AFC West opposition.

The revved-up Broncos become the first team to allow only one touchdown in the season's first five games since the 1934 Detroit Lions. With its third straight victory over Oakland, Denver stretches its regular-season home win streak to an NFL-high 13 games.

To add insult to injury, the stumbling Raiders hold the distinction as the league's only winless team. Detroit, Tampa Bay and Tennessee, which entered Week 6 along with Oakland as the NFL's only winless teams, all are victorious on this day.

The Broncos (4-1) build a 13-0 lead in the first half on Tatum Bell’s 2-yard touchdown run and two Jason Elam field goals.

Sebastian Janikowski kicks a 47-yard field goal in the third quarter for Oakland's only points after missing a 54-yarder in the first half.

Despite outgaining the Broncos 244-235 in total yards, the Raiders don’t score a touchdown for the third time in five games this season.

Oakland’s final possession typifies its winless season. After the Raiders advance to the Broncos’ 27 with under five minutes left, LaMont Jordan (photo, above) loses a fumble after catching a short pass from Andrew Walter.

Oakland commits 13 penalties for 95 yards, averages a mere 2.8 yards on 30 rushes, is only 4-of-13 on third-down efficiency and has key defensive breakdowns.

"Too many mistakes against a good football team, too many penalties against a good football team," Raiders coach Art Shell tells reporters after Oakland’s 10th straight loss to a division opponent. "When you do that, you don’t give yourself a chance to win."

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Denver
CB Champ Bailey — His interception at the Denver 1-yard line with 1:09 left in the first half stops a promising Raiders drive, which reaches the Broncos’ 28. Bailey also has four solo tackles and a pass defensed.
DE Elvis Dumervil — Contributes two of Denver’s four sacks.
OLB Ian Gold — His hit on Raiders RB LaMont Jordan forces a fumble, which is recovered by DT Michael Myers at the Denver 23-yard line with less than 4:37 left.

Oakland
DEs Derrick Burgess and Lance Johnstone — They each record a sack of Broncos QB Jake Plummer.
DB Chris Carr — Forces a fumble by Denver PR Darrent Williams in the third quarter to set up Sebastian Janikowski's 47-yard field goal. OLB Thomas Howard recovers Williams’ fumble at the Raiders’ 48-yard line after a 21-yard return.
WR Randy Moss — Has five receptions for 86 yards (17.2 yards per catch). On the negative, Moss makes little effort to break up an Andrew Walter pass intended for Moss that CB Champ Bailey intercepts at the Broncos' 1-yard line late in the first half.

KEY STAT:
The Broncos are the first team since the 1934 Detroit Lions to allow only one touchdown through the season’s first five game.

THEY SAID IT:
"Instead of moving forward, we’re moving backward. There’s positive things, but you have to look at wins and losses. We’re 0-5. We’re the only team in the NFL without a win. That makes me sick."

Raiders OG Barry Sims

""Offense sells tickets but defense wins championships. I think everybody knows that."

Broncos MLB Al Wilson

BY THE NUMBERS:
4: False start penalties on Raiders OT Chad Slaughter.
