Browns 24, Raiders 21

FLASH RECAP:
Oakland squanders an 18-point lead en route to an embarrassing loss to previously winless Cleveland before an announced crowd of 61,426 at McAfee Coliseum on Oct. 1, 2006.

Charlie Frye throws three touchdown passes and Cleveland's defense holds Oakland (0-3) scoreless with only 59 total yards in the second half. The Browns (1-3) erase a 21-10 halftime deficit on Frye touchdown passes to Kellen Winslow (2 yards) and Joe Jurevicious (5 yards) during the third quarter.

The Raiders (0-3) build a 21-3 lead in the first half. Linebacker Sam Williams returns a Reuben Droughns fumble 30 yards for a touchdown, Andrew Walter throws a 5-yard scoring pass to Randy Moss and Lamont Jordan scores on a 59-yard run.

Phil Dawson kicks a 28-yard field goal for the Browns after Oakland takes a 14-0 advantage.

Despite their ninth straight loss over two seasons, the Raiders show some positives. They have a season-high 194 rushing yards (128 by Lamont Jordan) and force their first interceptions (both by Nnamdi Ashmougha) of the season.

The Raiders start a season 0-3 for the second straight year. It’s the second time in club history (1961-62) that Oakland drops three games to open a season in consecutive years.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

PR Dennis Northcutt — His 58-yard punt return to the Oakland 17 sets up the Browns’ go-ahead TD.

Oakland
RB Lamont Jordan — Rushes for a season-high 128 yards on 20 carries. Jordan’s 59-yard TD run with 4:08 left in the first half gives Oakland a 21-3 lead.
DE Derrick Burgess — Has two sacks on Charlie Fyre.
CB Nnamdi Ashmougha — Has the first two interceptions of his four-year NFL career.

KEY STATS:
The Raiders are scoreless and have only 59 total yards in the second half after gaining 181 yards and scoring three touchdowns in the first half.

TURNING POINT:
With the Raiders leading 21-10 early in the third quarter, Browns TE Kellen Winslow makes a leaping 22-yard catch on fourth-and-8 from the Oakland 31. Two plays later, Winslow’s 2-yard TD catch narrows the Cleveland deficit to 21-17.

THEY SAID IT:
"We got to learn how to finish. When you’re at home and you’ve got a big lead like that, you have to choke a team out. We didn’t finish it, and that’s disappointing."

Raiders DE Lance Johnstone

"We got up 21-3 and let off the pedal. We can't do that. We have to go harder after that. I don't know if it was because it was something we weren't used to. We just couldn't handle it."

Raiders S Stuart Schweigert

"I think this win is huge for us. I thought it was a game we were supposed to win. I think it's a game that can spark us."

Browns QB Charlie Frye

BY THE NUMBERS:
6: Browns victories in their past seven meetings with the Raiders.
22:54: Oakland time of possession.
191: Combined kickoff return and punt return yards by the Browns’ Joshua Cribbs (118 yards) and Dennis Northcutt (73 yards).
194: Raiders rushing yards. They had a combined 126 rushing yards in the season’s first two games.

DID YOU KNOW?:
The Raiders have lost nine straight games— their longest skid since dropping 19 in a row in 1961-62. The Browns are 2-7 the past nine games. Their only to wins have come against the Raiders.

Since 1990 when the NFL playoffs expanded to 12 teams, only three of 79 teams advanced to the postseason after an 0-3 start.
