Chargers 38, Raiders 26

FLASH RECAP:
Philip Rivers throws for three touchdowns and 310 yards as visiting San Diego eliminates Oakland from playoff contention with a victory over the Raiders before an announced crowd of 58,721 at O.co Coliseum on Jan. 1, 2012 in their regular-season finale.

By losing to the Chargers, the Raiders (8-8) blow an opportunity to earn their first playoff berth since the 2002 season. With Denver (8-8) losing to Kansas City earlier in the day, the Raiders would have won the AFC West and advanced to the playoffs with a win over the Chargers (8-8).

After the Raiders narrow the deficit to 31-26 on a Kevin Boss touchdown catch with 9:37 left, the Chargers put a dagger in Oakland’s season and playoff hopes by driving 99 yards in four plays for a game-clinching touchdown. Rivers throws a 43-yard scoring pass to Malcolm Floyd to give San Diego a 38-26 lead with 6:48 remaining.

"If you can’t stop a team with everything on the line, you don’t deserve to be a playoff team,” defensive tackle Richard Seymour tells reporters after Oakland finishes its home season with a 3-5 record. “We didn’t get it done. So this one hurts. It stings for sure. It’s disappointing. It’s frustrating.”

Carson Palmer has 417 passing yards and two touchdowns and Sebastian Janikowski kicks four field goals for Oakland.

Floyd has seven catches for 127 yards and a TD and Antionio Gates has five catches for 106 yards and a TD for San Diego.

The Raiders set single-season records for penalties and yards penalized by committing eight infractions for 64 yards. They finish the season with 163 penalties for 1,358 yards, surpassing the totals of 158 for 1,304 set by the 1998 Kansas City Chiefs. The record-setting penalty was a hold by Rock Cartwright on the opening kick of the second half.

We didn’t get them stopped. And we didn’t make enough plays, so yeah, I’m (angry) at the team. …. When you have those kinds of opportunities, you’ve got to do it, and we didn’t do it.”

Raiders coach Hue Jackson

"We came into the game hoping and wishing and with your fingers crossed about other games. Then to find out it worked out the way you needed it to and to lose this one and the Detroit game. It’s going to be a long offseason.”
