Chiefs 20, Raiders 10

FLASH RECAP:
Running back Priest Holmes and an inspired defense lead Kansas City (4-4) past reeling Oakland (4-3) before an announced crowd of 78,685 at Arrowhead Stadium on Oct. 27, 2002. Holmes (above) has 184 total yards and scores on a 3-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter as the Chiefs end a five-game losing streak to the Raiders. Kansas City's maligned defense surrenders 417 total yards, but it allows a season-low 10 points and forces two fourth-quarter turnovers.

The Chiefs enter the game ranked last in the NFL in points allowed (230), total yards allowed (441.0 per game) and passing yards allowed (322.1 per game). The Raiders, who lose their third straight game after a 4-0 start, score only twice on six possessions inside the Chiefs' 35-yard line. "We shut up our critics for a while," defensive tackle Derrick Ransom tells reporters after the Chiefs beat the Raiders at Arrowhead for the first time since 1998.

Kansas City seals victory on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Trent Green to Tony Richardson with 1:55 remaining. The score is set up when Chiefs linebacker Mike Maslowski forces and recovers a Jerry Rice fumble at the Oakland 23.

Tight end Doug Jolley has a 1-yard touchdown catch and Sebastian Janikowski kicks a 32-yard field goal for the Raiders. Oakland's Tim Brown has 13 catches for 144 yards.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Kansas City
RB Priest Holmes - Rushes for 91 yards and a touchdown and has six catches for 93 yards.
LB Mike Maslowski - Forces a Jerry Rice fumble and recovers the football at the Oakland 23-yard line with under five minutes remaining to set up Kansas City's game-clinching touchdown.
LB Marvcus Patton - With the Chiefs leading 13-10, he returns a Rich Gannon interception 25 yards to the Kansas City 48 midway through the fourth quarter.
RB Tony Richardson - His 4-yard touchdown catch with 1:55 remaining seals the Chiefs' first win over the hated Raiders since 1999.
K Morten Andersen - Makes 46- and 22-yard field goal attempts; not a bad performance for a 42-year-old with a sore hamstring.

Oakland
WR Tim Brown - Has 13 catches for 144 yards, but none of his receptions come in the red zone. Brown had only 30 catches in the season's first six games.
LB Bill Romanowski - Has seven solo tackles, an interception and two passes defensed.
QB Rich Gannon - Throws for 334 yards and has a game-high 17-yard run, but his interception at the Kansas City 23 midway through the fourth quarter kills a promising drive.
DT Roderick Coleman - Contributes two of Oakland's three sacks.
RB Charlie Garner - Has a career-high 10 catches and 119 total yards (72 receiving, 47 rushing).

KEY STAT:
The Raiders score only twice (Doug Jolley's 1-yard touchdown catch and Sebastian Janikowski's 32-yard field goal) on six possessions inside the Chiefs' 35-yard line.

GOAT:
The Raiders' Jerry Rice loses a fumble at the Oakland 23-yard line after a 14-yard catch with four minutes, 39 seconds remaining. Five plays later, Trent Green throws a 4-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Tony Richardson on third-and-goal to increase the Kansas City lead to 20-10.

TURNING POINT:
See GOAT.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 5: Missed field goals by Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski so far this season, equaling his missed attempts in 2001. He missed four straight attempts over three games before hitting a 32-yarder in the fourth quarter against Kansas City.
  • 13: Receptions by Oakland's Tim Brown, one shy of his franchise record of 14 catches against Jacksonville in 1997.
  • 133: Yards rushing by Kansas City. The Raiders have allowed 466 yards rushing the past three games after surrendering only 238 yards on the ground in the season's first four games.

THEY SAID IT:
"We understood the urgency of the situation. All I can tell you from being out there is, too many mistakes. From all of us. We are just not executing in critical points of the game."

Raiders QB Rich Gannon

"We were due. I don't think it's a breakthrough. We expect to play like that. We just haven't been getting it done."

Chiefs DE Eric Hicks

DID YOU KNOW?:
The Raiders' Rich Gannon joins the Rams' Kurt Warner (2000) and the 49ers' Steve Young (1998) as the only players in NFL history to pass for more than 300 yards in six straight games.
