Chiefs 27, Raiders 24

FLASH RECAP:
Morten Andersen kicks a 35-yard field goal with four seconds left to lift Kansas City to a pulsating victory over Oakland before an announced crowd of 78,889 at Arrowhead Stadium on Nov. 23, 2003.

The wrenching loss ends the Raiders' three-year reign as AFC West champs.

After Sebastian Janikowski's 41-yard field goal deadlocks the score at 24-all, Trent Green drives the Chiefs (10-1) 38 yards in eight plays to set up Andersen's winning kick. On fourth-and-14 from the Oakland 33, Green throws a 16-yard pass to a wide open Marc Boerigter with nine seconds remaining. Boerigter beats cornerback Phillip Buchanon, who is assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty earlier in the quarter for removing his helmet after returning a punt deep into Chiefs' territory.

After Boerigter's first-down reception, Andersen drills the 35th game-winning field goal of his 22-year NFL career.

Jerry Rice and Tyrone Wheatley score second-half touchdowns to help rally Oakland (3-8) from a 21-7 halftime deficit. Rice, 41, becomes the first player in NFL history to reach 1,500 career receptions on a 47-yard touchdown catch 34 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Priest Holmes rushes for one touchdown and sets up another to lead Kansas City to its 11th straight home victory. He rushes for 91 yards (including a 2-yard TD run) and catches six passes for 100 yards.

The Raiders fall to 0-6 on the road this season and have dropped their past seven regular-season road games over two seasons.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Kansas City
K Morten Andersen - Kicks the game-winning 35-yard field goal with four seconds left. He also makes a 43-yard attempt in the third quarter to boost K.C.'s lead to 24-14.
RB Priest Holmes - Has 191 (91 rushing, 100 receiving) of the Chiefs' 384 total net yards. His 2-yard scoring run in the first quarter ties Marcus Allen's franchise record of 44 career touchdowns.
QB Trent Green - Completes 23 of 33 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown. Green is at his best in the final two minutes of each half (10-of-13 passing for 98 yards and a TD) as he leads the Chiefs to a touchdown and a game-winning field goal.
OLB Scott Fujita - Has a game-high 10 solo tackles (21 in two games against Oakland this season).
KR Dante Hall - His 29-yard return on a Sebastian Janikowski squib kick to the K.C. 45 jumpstarts the Chiefs' game-winning drive.

Oakland
WR Jerry Rice - Becomes the first player in NFL history to reach 1,500 career receptions on a 47-yard TD catch early in the fourth quarter.
QB Rick Mirer - Completes 19 of 31 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown. He also rushes five times for 38 yards, including a 13-yard TD late in the first half on third-and-seven.
RB Tyrone Wheatley - Rushes for a team-high 77 yards on 15 carries. His 15-yard TD run early in the third period ignites Oakland's comeback.
WR Jerry Porter - Contributes seven receptions for 89 yards.

KEY STAT:
Despite rushing for 166 yards, the Raiders try to pass (two incompletions & one sack) on their final three plays after driving to the Chiefs' 18-yard line with under three minutes remaining. On fourth down, Sebastian Janikowski kicks a game-tying 41-yard field goal.

TURNING POINT:
After Oakland narrows its deficit to 14-7 late in the first half, Kansas City drives 69 yards in only 1:28 to build a commanding 21-7 advantage. Trent Green caps the 8-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jason Dunn with 22 seconds left in the second quarter.

GOAT:
Raiders CB/PR Phillip Buchanon. For the second time this season, the immature Buchanon gift wraps a victory for the Chiefs. After returning a punt 27 yards to the K.C. 26, Buchanon is assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty because he rips off his helmet before talking trash to fans in the end zone seating area. Instead of starting a drive at the Chiefs' 26, the Raiders begin at the K.C. 41 and settle for a Sebastian Janikowski 41-yard goal, tying the score at 24-all with 2:18 remaining.

With 19 seconds left and and Chiefs facing a fourth-and-14 from the Raiders' 33, Buchanon is the beaten defender on a 16-yard completion from Trent Green to Marc Boerigter, setting up Morten Andersen's game-winning field goal. With the outcome at stake, Buchanon gives Boerigter at least a 20-yard cushion on the third-down play. "I was surprised they played that soft of a coverage," Green tells reporters after the Chiefs' second straight win over the Raiders. Buchanon says: "It's a tough loss, man. I didn't do enough for us to win."

When the Chiefs beat the Raiders 17-10 in Oakland on Oct. 20, Buchanon's lost fumble on a muffed punt leads to K.C.'s winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 0: Interceptions for Raiders QB Rick Mirer the past three games in 69 passing attempts.
  • 6: Raiders losses this season by seven points or less.
  • 35: Game-winning field goals by the Chiefs' Morten Andersen during his 22-season NFL career.
  • 193: Career TD receptions for Oakland's Jerry Rice, extending his NFL record.

THEY SAID IT:
"There was no doubt he was going to make it. If you could pick one guy in history to kick a game-winner at the end, who would you pick? You would pick Morten Andersen, right? Who else? I mean, who else?"

Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez

"That's Phillip Buchanon. Phillip giveth, and Phillip taketh away. That's just the way it is now."

Raiders WR Tim Brown

DID YOU KNOW?:
With the victory, the Chiefs hold a 43-42-2 advantage over the Raiders in regular-season games. Kansas City also has a 2-1 edge in postseason.
