OAKLAND RAIDERS RAP

Raiders 38, Colts 31

FLASH RECAP:
Quarterback Rich Gannon rushes for a team-record three touchdowns as the Raiders overcome a 21-point deficit to stun the Colts at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis before a crowd of 56,769 on Sept. 10, 2000. Running back Tyrone Wheatley runs for two other touchdowns to help Oakland start a season with two wins for the first time since 1995.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Oakland
QB Rich Gannon -- Engineers one of the most remarkable comebacks in franchise history by rushing for three touchdowns and passing for 207 yards.
RB Napoleon Kaufman -- Rushes for 66 yards on eight carries. With the Colts seemingly in command, he sets up Oakland's first two touchdowns with runs of 20 and 28 yards, respectively.
CB Tory James -- The former Bronco makes a game-saving interception in the Oakland end zone on Indy's final play with under 1:11 left. His 25-yard interception return sets up Gannon's third touchdown.
MLB Greg Biekert -- Makes the correct (defensive alignment) calls during the second half when Oakland holds Indy to one touchdown after surrendering 24 points in the first two periods. He also has a game-high 10 tackles and recovers a fumble.
Oakland offensive line -- No sacks allowed and only one penalty. Tackles Lincoln Kennedy and Matt Stinchomb, center Barret Robbins and guards Steve Wisniewski and Mo Collins perform superbly when the Raiders rally during the second half.
Indianapolis
QB Peyton Manning -- Passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Colts to a 24-7 advantage.
RB Edgerrin James -- Combines 13 rushes and five receptions for 111 total yards and two touchdowns in the first half.
WR Marvin Harrison -- Despite playing with a sore shoulder, he has 10 catches for 141 yards. Rallies the Colts in the fourth quarter on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Manning, trimming Oakland's lead to 38-31 with 5:39 left.

GOAT OF THE GAME:
Colts quarterback Peyton Manning hits only 8 of 18 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown during the second half. He also is called for a false start penalty after Indy drives to the Oakland 19 during the final minute.

TURNING POINT:
Oakland scores 31 points on six straight possessions for a 38-24 advantage with 5:39 remaining.

KEY DRIVE:
The Raiders move 54 yards in five plays to take a 31-24 advantage with 41 seconds left in the third quarter. Tyrone Wheatley caps the 2:04 drive with a 6-yard touchdown run.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 3: Rushing touchdowns by Oakland quarterback Rich Gannon.
  • 14: Consecutive passes completed by Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning.
  • 16: Total yards (14 rushing and 2 receiving) by Colts running back Edgerrin James in the second half. He had 111 total yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

THEY SAID IT:
"We knew we were playing the defending (AFC) Eastern champion at home. We knew we had our hands full. But as we told the team, sometimes you have to go a long ways to earn your respect. I think today is a start."

Oakland coach Jon Gruden
