Jets 24, Raiders 22

FLASH RECAP:
John Hall kicks a 53-yard field goal with 59 seconds remaining to lift New York past Oakland before an announced crowd of 62,011 at Network Associates Coliseum on Jan. 6, 2002. The Jets (10-6) earn an American Conference wild-card playoff berth with their first victory at Oakland since 1962. The Raiders, who clinched their second straight AFC West title on Dec. 15, end the regular season with three losses. Oakland (10-6) needed a win over New York to get a first-round bye in the playoffs. The Jets finish with a franchise-best 7-1 road record after their fifth fourth-quarter comeback this season.

The Raiders defense holds Pro Bowl running back Curtis Martin to 50 yards rushing, but it surrenders two long touchdown plays -- a 40-yard pass from Vinny Testaverde to Laveranues Coles and a 46-yard run by rookie LaMont Jordan. The Jets also score a touchdown on Jason Glenn's 4-yard return of a blocked punt. For the Raiders, Tyrone Wheatley scores on a 3-yard run and Rich Gannon throws an 18-yard touchdown pass to Roland Williams. Oakland's Brad Daluiso kicks field goals of 23, 44 and 37 yards, but he misses an extra point attempt and a 28-yard field goal attempt. Despite gaining 337 total yards, the Raiders score only two touchdowns on six possessions inside the Jets' 27-yard line.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

New York
K John Hall -- Kicks a 53-yard field goal (third longest of his career) for the winning points with 59 seconds left.
WR Laveranues Coles -- Has five receptions for 111 yards. Coles eludes Raiders CB Eric Allen and FS Anthony Dorsett on a 40-yard screen pass on the game's second play.
WR Kevin Swayne -- His only catch keeps New York's game-winning drive alive when he beats Raiders CB Eric Allen for a 15-yard reception on third-and-10 from the Jets' 36.
LB James Farrior -- Contributes a game-high 11 tackles (10 solo).
S Chris Hayes -- Sets up the Jets' second touchdown when he blocks a Shane Lechler punt. Teammate Jason Glenn scoops up the football and returns it four yards for a touchdown and a 13-9 New York.
RB LaMont Jordan -- Scores his second NFL touchdown on a 46-yard run on third-and-one early in the third quarter.

Oakland
TE Roland Williams -- Has four catches for 33 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown reception.
RB Charlie Garner -- Contributes a season-high 84 yards rushing on 19 carries and catches five passes for 31 yards.
RB Tyrone Wheatley -- Rushes for 28 yards on eight carries, including a 3-yard touchdown run. His 13-yard run in the first quarter is his longest since the season opener.
CB Tory James -- Returns a Vinny Testaverde interception to set up the Raiders' first touchdown.
WR Tim Brown -- Has a game-high six receptions for 57 yards, but he doesn't have a touchdown catch for the fifth straight game.

GOAT OF THE GAME:
Raiders kicker Brad Daluiso. Daluiso, signed the previous Thursday to replace cellulitis-stricken Sebastian Janikowski, clangs an extra point attempt off the left upright and misses a 28-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter. The former New York Giants kicker makes field goals of 23, 44 and 37 yards, but only one of his six kickoffs reach inside the 10-yard line.

TURNING POINT:
With Oakland leading 22-21, Rich Gannon overthrows a wide-open Roland Williams on third-and-two from the Raiders' 37 with 2:23 remaining. There was no defender within 20 yards of Williams because both New York safeties were near the line of scrimmage anticipating a running play. After an Oakland punt, New York drives 29 yards to set up John Hall's game-winning 53-yard field goal.

KEY DRIVE:
New York moves 29 yards in eight plays for the game-winning field goal. On third-and-10 from the Jets' 36, Vinny Testaverde completes a 15-yard pass to Kevin Swayne. On the next play, Testaverde hits Laveranues Coles for a 10-yard completion to the Oakland 39. On fourth-and-six from the Oakland 35, Jon Hall booms a 53-yard field goal to give New York a 24-22 lead with 59 seconds remaining.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 5: New York fourth-quarter comeback victories this season.
  • 6: Touchdowns by the Raiders in their past four games.
  • 7: Road wins by New York in eight games this season.
  • 119: Rushing yards by Oakland, its third best output of the season.

THEY SAID IT:
"Three weeks in a row we get beat on virtually the last play of the game. It's hard to breathe. It's hard to see straight. It's a hard business that way. This a great opportunity to see what you do in the face of adversity. We will either crumble or we won't and that is the challenge we will face together."

Raiders coach Jon Gruden

"To ride all the way across the country and lose a spot in the playoffs, after all the opportunities we lost this year, that would have been the ride to hell."

Jets RB Curtis Martin

DID YOU KNOW?:
The Jets win their first regular-season game at Oakland in four decades. The New York Titans beat the Raiders 28-17 at Frank Youell Field on Sept. 9, 1962. The franchise changed its name from Titans to Jets in 1963. The Titans/Jets are 4-8-1 at Oakland.
