Raiders 26, Jets 20

FLASH RECAP:
Tim Brown, Rich Gannon and Jerry Rice each reach milestones as Oakland holds off visiting New York before an announced crowd of 62,257 at Network Associates Coliseum on Dec. 2, 2002.

With a third-quarter catch, Brown joins Rice and Cris Carter as the only NFL players with 1,000 career receptions. Gannon throws for 342 yards, tying Dan Marino (1984), Warren Moon (1990) and Kurt Warner (1999) as the only NFL players to exceed 300 yards passing in a game nine times in a single season. With 66 receiving yards on four catches, Rice reaches 1,000 yards for the 14th time in his illustrious career.

The Raiders (8-4) score two touchdowns in the third quarter to erase a 10-6 halftime deficit. Gannon throws a 26-yard touchdown pass to Rice and Zack Crockett scores on a 1-yard run. Sebastian Janikowski kicks field goals of 23, 48, 36 and 29 yards, and Rod Woodson seals Oakland's fourth straight victory with a final-play interception.

Chad Pennington passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns for the Jets (6-6), who have their four-game win streak snapped. New York's Laveranues Coles has 10 catches for 158 yards, but running back Curtis Martin is held to 26 yards rushing on 11 attempts. The Raiders out-gain the Jets 411 total yards to 274, and New York has the football for only 23 minutes, 26 seconds.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Oakland
WR Tim Brown - Becomes only the third player in league history to reach 1,000 career receptions when he makes a 6-yard catch early in the third quarter. Brown finishes with eight catches for 90 yards.
WR Jerry Rice - One play after Tim Brown gets his 1,000th career reception, the incomparable Rice erases a 10-6 Jets lead with a 26-yard touchdown catch early in the second half. Rice also has an 18-yard catch on third-and eight late in the fourth quarter to help set up Sebastian Janikowski's fourth field goal.
QB Rich Gannon - With 342 yards passing, he exceeds 300 yards in a game for the ninth time this season (equaling an NFL record). Gannon is sacked four times and engineers only two touchdowns on five possessions inside the New York 27-yard line.
FS Rod Woodson - Blocks a John Hall field goal attempt (from 34 yards) in the second quarter and intercepts a Chad Pennington pass at the Oakland 9-yard line on the game's final play.
DT John Parrella - Has only four tackles (three solo) but is a disruptive force at the line of scrimmage as the Jets rush for only 32 yards (2.3 yards per carry) on 14 attempts.
K Sebastian Janikowski - Is four-for-four on field goal attempts from 23, 48, 36 and 29 yards.

New York
QB Chad Pennington - Completes 22 of 34 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Pennington engineers two fourth-quarter scoring drives, but he is successful on only one of eight third-down plays and throws an interception on New York's only fourth-down try.
WR Laveranues Coles - Has 10 catches for 158 yards. Coles must enjoy playing at Network Associates Coliseum. The former Florida State receiver has 23 catches for 492 yards the past three games in Oakland.
NT Jason Ferguson - Contributes one of the Jets' four sacks against Rich Gannon and has five solo tackles.
KR Chad Morton - Averages 26.1 yards on seven kickoff returns, but his fumbled punt leads to an Oakland touchdown.

KEY STAT:
The Jets allow 300 yards passing for the first time in 31 regular-season games.

GOAT:
New York punt returner Chad Morton. Morton fumbles a Shane Lechler punt when he is drilled by Oakland's Marcus Knight. Adam Treu recovers the fumble at the New York 12-yard line. Four plays later, Zack Crockett scores on a 1-yard touchdown run to increase the Raiders' lead to 20-10 with 2:32 left in the late in the third period.

TURNING POINT:
The Raiders score two touchdowns in the third quarter to rally for a 20-10 lead. Rich Gannon throws a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Rice 4:01 into the second half as Oakland erases a 10-6 deficit. After Oakland's Adam Treu recovers a Chad Morton fumbled punt at the New York 12-yard line, the Raiders need only four plays to score their second touchdown. Zack Crockett scores on a 1-yard run after rushing for two yards on third-and-one from the Jets' 3.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 4: Consecutive victories by the Raiders, who opened the season with four wins followed by four losses before their current four-game winning streak.
  • 16.5: Average yards per catch on four receptions for 66 yards by the Raiders' Jerry Rice.
  • 26: Rushing yards by New York's Curtis Martin, who exceeded 100 rushing yards in each of the Jets' previous two games.
  • 1,004: Career receptions for Oakland's Tim Brown.

THEY SAID IT:
"It would have been horrible if we lost the game. Getting the record was nice, but obviously the win was the most important thing."

Raiders WR Tim Brown

"Everybody's thirsty here. Yeah, there are a lot of old guys, but they're old guys who realize they don't have too many more chances. The time is now and we all know it."

Raiders OG Frank Middleton

"We had one turnover and that kind of got us. You give a team with that many weapons an opportunity and they'll take advantage."

Jets coach Herman Edwards

DID YOU KNOW?:
Raiders safety Rod Woodson has a 17-1 record on Monday Night Football. The 15-year veteran is 10-1 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, 3-0 with the San Francisco 49ers and 2-0 with the Baltimore Ravens and the Raiders.
