OAKLAND RAIDERS RAP

Raiders 23, Lions 17

FLASH RECAP:
Sebastian Janikowski kicks three field goals to help the Raiders beat the Detroit Lions 23-17 before an announced crowd of 32,365 fans at Network Associates Coliseum on Aug. 18, 2000. Running back Randy Jordan and quarterback Bobby Hoying have short touchdown runs for Oakland.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Oakland
PK Sebastian Janikowski -- Kicks field goals of 38, 39, and 41 yards. The rookie has made five in a row since having a 57-yard attempt blocked against Dallas on Aug. 13.
QB Rich Gannon -- Engineers two scoring drives during the first half as the Raiders build a 13-0 advantage. He completes 6 of 10 passes for 32 yards, and also rushes for 35 yards on three scrambles.
WR Jerry Porter -- Averages 19.7 yards on three receptions in his Oakland debut. His 39-yard catch sets up Bobby Hoying's 4-yard touchdown run with 3:20 left in the third quarter.
TE Rickey Dudley -- Playing his first game since undergoing offseason back surgery, Oakland's Mr. Hands of Stone has a team-high four catches for 22 yards. He also coughs up a fumble after catching an 8-yard pass on the Raiders' opening possession.
Detroit
RB James Stewart -- Rallies Detroit with two touchdowns during the final 5:56 of the first half. He eludes four defenders en route to the end zone on a 32-yard reception after catching a screen pass from Stoney Case. Stewart also scores on a 12-yard run with 49 seconds left in the second quarter.
MLB Stephen Boyd -- Contributes a game-high seven solo tackles and two sacks. Forces a fumble when he blasts Oakland tight end Rickey Dudley.
SS Kurt Schulz -- Sets up Detroit's second touchdown after returning a Marcus Knight fumble 13 yards to the Oakland 23.

TURNING POINT:
Oakland strikes for 10 unanswered points to take a 23-14 lead during the third period. Sebastian Janikowski kicks a 41-yard field goal to erase a 14-13 deficit and then Bobby Hoying scores on a 4-yard run.

KEY DRIVE:
The Raiders move 60 yards in five plays, culminated by Bobby Hoying's 4-yard touchdown run with 2:39 left in the third quarter. Hoying passes 39 yards to Jerry Porter for a first down at the Detroit 21.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 3: Field goals by Oakland place-kicker Sebastian Janikowski.
  • 13: Penalties by Detroit for 152 yards.
  • 51: Rushing yards by Oakland quarterbacks Rich Gannon and Bobby Hoying.

DID YOU KNOW?:
The game was the Lions' first-ever preseason visit to Oakland. Detroit suffered a 34-0 loss to the Raiders at UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium on Aug. 10, 1975. The Lions are winless in three regular-season games against the Raiders at Oakland.
