OAKLAND RAIDERS RAP

Seahawks 27, Raiders 24

FLASH RECAP:
Quarterback Jon Kitna engineers two late touchdown drives as Seattle (6-9) stuns Oakland at rain-drenched Husky Stadium on Dec. 16, 2000. Kitna's 9-yard TD pass to wide receiver Darrell Jackson with 28 seconds remaining erases a 24-21 Oakland advantage. With the Raiders (11-4) leading 24-19, the Seahawks get a controversial safety when Oakland's Marquez Pope is ruled down in the end zone after he recovers a fumble by Seattle's Ricky Watters. Following an Oakland punt on the ensuing free kick, Kitna drives Seattle 61 yards for the winning touchdown. Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon completes only 5 of 17 passes for 136 yards with three interceptions. Randy Jordan scores on 6- and 7-yard runs for the Raiders, who blow an 11-point lead in the final quarter.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Seattle
QB Jon Kitna -- Looks like the reincarnation of Johnny Unitas in rallying the Seahawks to their fourth victory in six games. Completes 12 of 16 passes in the final quarter, including 4 of 6 on the winning drive. He finishes with 19 completions in 30 attempts for 177 yards and two TDs.
RB Ricky Watters -- Rushes for 168 yards on 26 carries. Also makes four receptions for 37 yards. His 26-yard run sets up Rian Lindell's 52-yard field goal at the end of the first half.
WR Darrell Jackson -- Has four catches for 52 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown reception to lift Seattle into the lead with 28 seconds left. Makes a 20-yard catch to the Oakland 41 on the winning drive.
PK Rian Lindell -- Hits 40- and 52-yard field goals to help the Seahawks build a 13-10 advantage at halftime.
MLB Isaiah Kacyvenski -- Stops an Oakland drive when he intercepts a Rich Gannon pass at the Seattle 3 late in the third quarter.

Oakland
RB Tyrone Wheatley -- Rushes for 146 yards on 26 carries before being sidelined with an ankle injury late in the third quarter.
RB Randy Jordan -- Scores on 6- and 7-yard runs to help the Raiders build a 24-13 lead. Rushes for a season-high 55 yards on 11 carries.
CB Charles Woodson -- Has an interception and forces two fumbles.
LB Bobby Brooks -- Blocks a Jeff Feagles punt at the Seahawks 23 to set up Sebastian Janikowski's 25-yard field goal.

GOAT OF THE GAME:
Oakland defense surrenders 182 yards in the final 11:48 as Seattle overcomes a 24-13 deficit. The Seahawks are a perfect 5-of-5 on third down conversions on their final two touchdown drives.

TURNING POINT:
Oakland CB Charles Woodson strips the ball from Seattle's Ricky Watters after Watters runs 53 yards to the Raiders 28 with under three minutes remaining. S Marquez Pope recovers the ball at the 2, but slides into the end zone for what is ruled a safety to reduce Oakland's lead to 24-21.

KEY DRIVE:
Seattle moves 61 yards in nine plays for the winning touchdown. QB Jon Kitna throws a 9-yard scoring pass to WR Darrell Jackson to give the Seahawks a 27-24 lead with 28 seconds remaining. Kitna keeps the drive alive when he runs for two yards to the Oakland 14 on third-and-one.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 1: Missed field goals by Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski.
  • 2: Offside penalties on Raiders DT Darrell Russell.
  • 3: Interceptions by Oakland QB Rich Gannon.
  • 16: Losses by the Raiders in 23 regular-season games in December and January since 1994.
  • 168: Yards rushing by Seattle RB Ricky Watters.

THEY SAID IT:
"We should have stopped them on that last drive. We'll get over it. But guys are really hurt."

Raiders DE Lance Johnstone

"I would rather have Ricky (Watters) run it in, then we wouldn't have all the problems. But it made for an exciting ending."

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren

DID YOU KNOW?:
QB Jon Kitna has led the Seahawks to three comeback victories over the Raiders since 1997. In his first NFL start, he throws for 283 yards and one TD as Seattle overcomes a 21-3 deficit to beat the Raiders 22-21 at Oakland on Dec. 14, 1997. Kitna passes for 213 yards and two TDs as the Seahawks erase a 21-9 deficit en route to a 22-21 triumph over Oakland in the Kingdome on Oct. 3, 1999. He throws for 177 yards and two TDs to help the Seahawks beat the Raiders 27-24 at Seattle on Dec. 16, 2000.
